There is a great joke amongst sports fans, especially college football fans that states “Superman wears Tim Tebow pajamas.” This joke speaks to the greatness, popularity, and influence that Tebow possesses.
Most parents hope to raise a child that projects a similar image to the one Tebow seems to have (I say that with hesitance due to the recent happenings of Tiger Woods). Tebow is known for going on missions to third world countries in the off season, firing up teammates without ever cursing, and most notably saving himself for marriage ( a virgin).
It has been confirmed that CBS is running a 30 second ad during the Super Bowl that the national women’s coalition group finds the ad to be filled with anti-abortion sentiment featuring Tim and Pam (mother) Tebow.
Why is Tebow the perfect candidate for this commercial? Who would actually waste 2.5 million dollars to play something during a designated bathroom break? Should athletes use their platform to speak about such topics?
One More Miracle for Tim
The theme of the commercial is “celebrate life, celebrate family,” is this somehow suggesting that all people who don’t abort will have children that celebrate Hiesmen’s and National Championships?
Besides the many obvious reasons that make Tebow the perfect poster child for this issue, now it gets even better. In 1987 Pam Tebow went on a mission trip to the Philippines and got sick while pregnant with Tim, Pam ignored recommendations to abort her pregnancy.
During a press conference gearing up for the Senior Bowl Tebow was asked about the commercial in question. “I know some people won’t agree with it, but I think they can at least respect that I stand up for what I believe,” Tebow said.
Tebow went on to say, “I’ve always been very convicted of it (view on abortion) because that’s the reason I’m here, because my mom was a very courageous woman. So any way that I could help, I would do it.”
This new information only leads me to believe that his angel like personification is actually accurate.
Beats Going Door to Door
The money that was funded for this campaign comes from a group of conservative Christians called “focus on the family.” Gary Schneeberger a spokesmen for the group said that the money did come from their general fund but from a few generous donors.
In a protest letter to CBS the women’s media center tells them by offering such a coveted spot in the programming to an anti-equality, anti-choice, homophobic organization that CBS will be doing itself a disservice to viewers.
“We understand that some people don’t think very highly of what we do,” Schneeberger said. “We’re not trying to sell you a soft drink — we’re not selling anything. We’re trying to celebrate families.”
Is Mr. Schneeberger trying to get us to believe that an organization that he is apart of wants nothing in return for purchasing ADVERTISMENT during the most expensive five hours of the year?
If so, why don’t we “celebrate family” during a commercial break of reruns for Will & Grace?
What Mr. Schneeberger and his friends are really trying to do is celebrate how much better a family is that doesn’t believe abortion is an acceptable thing to do.
Don’t Abort Your True Feelings
I think that Tebow is probably a great kid and I love many of things he represents. If he feels that abortion is wrong and wants to let people know his story then he should go ahead and do so.
I actually applaud Timothy for speaking out about something he feels so strongly about. I personally don’t think I should be able to tell women what to do with their bodies, but that’s just me, a fellow sinner to all of those abortions.
If athletes are going to pour advertisements about junk I don’t need and something that doesn’t even represent who they really are, then go right on represent something you believe in. Show us your true color, which has never been a problem of the Tebows, who speak often about their religion and Missionary work.
Maybe if Tiger Woods wasn’t such a pond of the media then we would have seen him do a few more risky commercials that degraded women by stereotyping that all of them have big boobs and blond hair. Had he done ads like that then we might not have been so shocked to find out that the guy is actually the opposite of his commercial image.
Most athletes don’t want to alienate anyone because that will cost them advertising dollars in future opportunities. Most of the inner city athletes believe that the government leaves them for dead unless they can throw, catch, or dunk a ball but don’t have what it takes to say anything about it.
If Tebow feels that he is going to save babies that would otherwise have no chance without his story then that’s great. The only advice I can give him is, if your going to do this then don’t ever get caught paying off a hooker whom you’ve impregnated to have an abortion.
