Alright if you selected C, please stop reading and find your biggest friend and have him punch you in the face.
The correct answer is D, college football BCS ranking system. Choices A, B, and C are all examples of issues that should be handled by our government.
Which is why I’m confused to learn that Utah Senator Orrin Hatch would write a letter to the current administration asking them to look into anti-trust laws surrounding the BCS committee.
Does Senator Hatch actually have a case? Should congress investigate using tax payer’s money to attempt to install a playoff format?
BCS Has Met It’s Hatch
It’s no coincidence that the Senator who wrote this letter comes from a state in which the Utah football program went undefeated in 2008 and did not get a shot at the National Championship.
The Utes finished the season by beating No. 4 ranked Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. I wonder if Mr. Hatch’s motives are for additional money and notoriety that the state of Utah could have gained, or a chance to give those players a fair shot at something they deserved.
The Associated Press obtained a letter written to Senator Hatch from Assistant Attorney General Ronald Weich.
“The administration shares your belief that the current lack of a college football national championship playoff with respect to the highest division of college football … raises important questions affecting millions of fans, colleges and universities, players and other interested parties,” Weich wrote.

Assistant Attorney General Weich says it will affect millions of “fans”, that’s great but how many millions of “fans” of the government want you to be concerned about health care, not about Boise State getting to play for a BCS title?
How exactly will it affect “colleges and universities”? All the teams who get BCS bowl bids receive large sums of money to contribute to their universities.
Mr. Weich finishes by saying “and other interested parties”. What he really means, is all those really rich people who fund our campaigns for the Democrat and Republican parties get a say too.
The only parties in that quote that I feel for are the fans and the players (programs). Those are also the two parties that should be changing this BCS system, not the government.
BCS Works Like The Government
“I’m encouraged by the administration’s response,” Senator Hatch released in a statement.
He went on to say much more and finished with a line of bologna.
“I continue to believe there are antitrust issues the administration should explore, but I’m heartened by its willingness to consider alternative approaches to confront the tremendous inequities in the BCS that favor one set of schools over others. The current system runs counter to basic fairness that every family tries to instill in their children from the day they are born.”
The current BCS system runs just like are current government; we offer the best and greatest opportunities to those that offer us the most capital gain. We crap on those that offer us little to nothing in return.
If Utah wants things to be “fair” then perhaps they need to play in the Big 12 and get more national attention which will yield more revenue for the BCS title game sponsors.
It’s All About The Benjamins
Should there be a playoff system in place? “Yes”! Should the government legislate this process? “No”!
Earlier I stated that it was the job of the fans and programs to change the current BCS system. It is going to take some radical movements to change the minds of the BCS committee.
I’m assuming that all college football players who want to win a National Championship want to do so by defeating the best of the best. If so, these big name BCS teams need to start calling out these lesser known programs through there various forms of social media to create a buzz about a possible match up.
The Athletic Directors of these lesser know programs need to work harder to beef up the competition on their schedules therefore making them more legit.
This one is the most important to remember, fans must stop supporting these big commercialized BCS games if in fact there are other teams worthy of competing for the National title. It’s called boycotting, it has worked in the past if people feel passionate enough and get on the same page.
The current BCS format must be changed but not by congress, our country has more pressing issues. It’s all about the money for both sides, until the people making that money can be assured they’ll make it in the new format the system will stay the same.
