Track coach Trevor Graham, who helped launch the federal probe of steroid use reportedly will be charged by the grand jury following up on that very matter and all of Bay Area Laboratory Co-op’s dealings.
The grand jury that is expected to indict Graham is the same panel investigating baseball slugger Barry Bonds for tax evasion and perjury related to his testimony about not knowingly using performance enhancing drugs.
Graham initiated the whole controversy by anonymously mailing a vial containing “the Clear,” a previously undetectable steroid to the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. At the 2004 Athens Olympics, Graham acknowledged mailing the drug. The Clear was manufactured by Patrick Arnold and distributed (in part) by Victor Conte through BALCO.
Two Justice Department officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because the charges had not been made public, told The Associated Press that they expected Graham would be charged with obstruction of justice as early as Nov. 2. The two officials both with knowledge of the investigation, said Graham would be charged with making false statements to authorities investigating issues relating to BALCO.
Graham operates Raleigh-based Sprint Capitol USA. Many of his athletes, including Justin Gatlin and LaTasha Jenkins, have been suspended for using performance-enhancing drugs.
Five men connected to BALCO pleaded guilty to steroid distribution and other charges including Arnold, Conte, and Barry BondsÂ’ long-time friend and trainer, Greg Anderson.
