Our friend Johnny Testa over at AskMen.com provided us with this awesome Rashad Evans Interview. Evans gave up all kinds of good information including details on his technical and physical training as well as his diet. You may or may not be surprised to hear that Rashad Evans never cheats on his diet, not even a little bit, when he is training for a fight. You wouldn’t either if cheating on your diet made you feel like you just “had sex with a dirty prostitute”. Or would you? Anyways, here is the “training” portion of the interview:
Which fighting styles do you focus on the most when training for an upcoming fight?
I pretty much focus on all the main styles out there, karate, wrestling, boxing, jiujitsu, just pretty much anything within MMA.
Can you describe for me what you do in one full week of training?
A little bit of everything. At 10:30 a.m. we cover any one of the many areas in the mixed martial arts world, so one day it could be Chute boxing, punching, takedowns, another day it could just be wrestling and wrestling takedowns and then another day it could be only stand-up fighting, it varies throughout the whole week. I always hit mitts in the evening and work on my conditioning after that. Tuesdays and Thursdays I get up early in the morning and do strength conditioning which usually consists of a lot of explosive movements.
How long do you normally train in a day?
I train between six and eight hours a day.
How long a break would you take between fights before getting back to your training?
Depends on how banged up I am but I usually take a week off after a fight before getting back to my training.
What kind of diet are you on when training for a fight?
I try to stay away from high sodium and high sugar. I keep track of my protein, but I try to eat really clean more than anything. No fried foods, no fast food, no cheat days, not even a little. I actually had fast food a few weeks ago and I felt like I just had sex with a dirty prostitute and I felt awful. I was like, why did I just do that.
