We are now one day away from the season 2 debut of Bellator Fighting Championships on FSN, ESPN Deportes and Telemundo. I’ve already mentioned in the past that I think Bellator’s welterweight division is stacked, and my opinion hasn’t changed. The 7 fights that decide the number one contender for welterweight look to be the most exciting bouts the entire promotion has to offer.
The 8 welterweight challengers will be looking to dethrone Bellator’s current champion, Lyman Good, who made it look easy last year. Good won via stoppage in all three of his fights defeating Hector Urbina via rear naked choke, Jorge Ortiz by cut stoppage and won the finals against Oscar De La Cruz by TKO against the cage in the first round. Listed below are the first round quarterfinal matchups along with the dates they will take place.
- Ben Askren (3-0) vs. Ryan Thomas (10-3) April 15th, 2010
- Dan Hornbuckle (19-2) vs. Sean Pierson (9-4) April 22nd, 2010
- Jacob McClintock (6-0) vs. Jim Wallhead (18-5) April 22nd 2010
- Brett Cooper (12-5) vs. Steve Carl (9-1) April 22nd 2010
